For a large portion of my life, I’ve had challenges with mental health. Being an overthinker, I would often find myself spiraling, ruminating and making up fake scenarios in my head.

I’d replay conversations, stress about what I had said and lose sleep over what people thought of me. I focused on what was going wrong for me, why I felt this way, how I could stop feeling this way…

Over time this consistent swirling of thoughts caused me so much overwhelm, eventually leading towards burnout.

I tried everything; healthy eating, cutting out sugar, fasting, exercise, meditation, sound healing, yoga, breathwork, mindfulness exercises, reading, less screen time, bubble baths, doing less, trying not to stress…

But you guessed it - nothing worked.

I wish someone had told me when I was younger that you can actually CHOOSE your thoughts.

What you focus on, you see more of. So if you’re constantly focused on what’s going wrong in your life - you’ll see more of it. That’s exactly what was happening inside my brain.

When I found journaling - I actually started with two types: brain dumps and gratitude prompts. Both of these things gave me instant relief and have been essential building blocks in the return to a healthy state of mind.

There’s actually science behind this! Practicing gratitude stimulates the release of “feel good” neurotransmitters, like dopamine and serotonin. This chemical shift reduces stress by lowering cortisol levels, priming your mind for a happier, more resilient, and healthier state of being.

For me, intentionally deciding to focus on what was going right, who and what I appreciated and choosing what thoughts to entertain - was life changing.

I found journaling so effective in changing my own mindset, it inspired me to create my own line of guided journals and my brand inward journal co in November 2024.
